Do You Know Why Your Baby is crying?

From the first days of life and even up to the age of 3-4, the most common way children express themselves is through crying. By crying they draw the attention of the adults they need help from. Even though most parents understand that this is just the way the young one communicates, the first sensation you feel when you hear your child crying is often panic.

Here are five of the most common reasons why young children complain:

Bellyache (colic)

Baby colic appears in the first few weeks of life and will disappear around the age of 3-4 months. If the baby’s belly feels tough, or he bends his hands, and wraps the lower limbs on the abdomen, then it means he might have a colic. Some of the causes can be: digestive problems, excess air swallowed with milk, eating too fast or too much. Although it is a normal body reaction, quite common in babies, the appearance of colic is not mandatory. To alleviate these symptoms, parents can gently massage the baby’s abdomen, get them a lukewarm bath, and help them ease down the tension through affection, attention and patience.

The appearance of teeth

Dental eruption occurs around the age of 4-8 months in most cases. The most common symptoms that announce the appearance of the first teeth are: inflammation of the gums and abundant salivation; or the child puts objects or his hands in his mouth and is agitated, including during the night. To help alleviate these symptoms caused by dental eruption, parents have antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications that have a pleasant aroma, such as oranges or strawberries, and be administered starting with at the age of three months, depending on the situation.

Otitis

Acute otitis media commonly occurs as a complication of a simple cold, and is usually suspected in children whose fever lasts for more than 2-3 days. Other common symptoms include agitation, or purulent secretions from the ears. Due to the structural particularities at young ages, acute otitis media is more common in infants and young children.

Headache

Headache occurs regardless of age, and is one of the most common reasons why babies cry. It is usually associated with fever, teeth or eyesight problems. It is good to take your child to a pediatrician in order to make sure there is nothing serious, because headache is a symptom that occurs in various conditions, including meningitis.

Throat pain

Sore throat is caused by inflammation produced by microbes (bacteria or viruses) in the upper respiratory tract. The most commonly affected areas are pharynx and larynx (the part of the neck containing the vocal cords). The appearance of sore throat may be a sign of viral pharyngitis, strep throat tonsillitis, or even of various childhood diseases, such as measles. In order to relieve pain, you should give your young one an analgesic and anti-inflammatory medicine – such as ibuprofen, but medical advice is highly recommended, to make sure you properly identify the cause of the pain. During this time, try to prepare them small, mainly liquid meals, which can be served lightly, and make sure the food is not too hot, to avoid worsening the inflammation.
