The gap between our teeth: why they appear in children and adults

The diastema, or the gap that sometimes appears between our teeth can be disturbing for some, while for others it is a distinctive sign that makes them feel special. We have to admit that the diastema offers a special look and has its charm, but many wonder how and why this gap appears in the first place. Orthodontist specialists say that this problem occurs more frequently in children than in adults, and if it is disturbing, it can be treated regardless of the age of the patient.

What is the diastema

The median diastema represents a space greater than 0.5mm between the two front teeth, and even if it is only visible when we smile or speak, this distance between the teeth can affect speech, especially when the letters “s” and ” t “.

Children are most often affected by diastema, but often in their case the problem is temporary and should be corrected after the teeth begin to fall. In adults, however, the diastema is most often permanent and will require treatment.

Diastema: Causes of occurrence in children

Transitory diastema. Most commonly encountered in children, the transitory diastema is a temporary stage when the two central incisors are too distant. Once the neighboring teeth erupt, the gap closes down as a result of the pressure.

Mouth breathing or finger sucking. Both habits can result in pushing the teeth forward and, implicitly, the dental gap appears.

Diastema vera. The upper lip tread is guilty for the occurrence of the gap, being a fibrous tissue that can penetrate between the teeth.

Too small, or to large teeth. When the child inherits the jaw from a parent and the teeth from the other one, these dental gaps may appear between several teeth, not just between the two central incisors, and can only be treated with fixed dental braces.

Diastema: causes of occurrence in adults

Periodontitis. When the gums and bone recede, the teeth begin to move, and thus the spaces between the teeth can easily appear.

Dental extractions. If after a dental extraction the teeth are not replaced for a long time by implants, the teeth might tend to migrate in the remaining spaces.
