Many people have the habit of consuming energy drinks either because they feel tired or because they simply like them, but few know or are aware of their effects on health, and especially the ingredients that they contain.
Many studies show that energizers can dehydrate and can over-stimulate the nervous system. In addition, it is a really bad idea to combine energy drinks with alcohol because it can cause harm to your body.
What are energy drinks?
- Caffeine is the main source of energy contained in energy drinks. A dose contains an average of 100-150 mg of caffeine, but the amount depends on the brand that produces the energizer.
- Taurine is basically an organic amino acid that scientists discovered in ox bile in the 1820s. It is important for body development, but there is not enough evidence to support the fact that it increases energy.
Taurine is useful for the body because it regulates body temperature when it is too hot or too cold, reduces stress, while also increasing heart performance and helping to detoxify the body.
- Guarana. The plant grows in Amazon and produces caffeine-containing fruits. When it is found among the ingredients on the label of an energy drink, it is important for you to understand that the drink contains a lot of caffeine, and therefore it most probably is very strong.
- Vitamin B. The vitamin B complex is often used to provide the body with energy.
- L-Carnitine. This is an amino acid produced by the liver and kidneys and helps to increase mental performance, which is why energy drink companies use it.
- Sugar. The high sugar content of energy drinks stimulates the body, because glucose is an important source of energy.
Effects of consuming energy drinks
Because the effect of energy drinks on the heart is not known, they are not recommended for people with cardiovascular disease and children. In addition, over time, there have been studies which concluded that the left ventricle was contracting harder one hour after consuming a single dose of an energy drink.
Some people may be more sensitive to certain ingredients that these drinks might contain. Therefore, it should be noted that pregnant and lactating women should not consume these beverages because, in their case, caffeine is eliminated much more slowly from the body.
Energy drinks can also dehydrate you. They won’t make you feel any less thirsty, and if you consume them alone it could lead to dehydration. This is why, if consuming such drinks, you should always be careful to have some water, too.
Also, an important thing to mention is that alcohol cancels the positive effects of the energy drink, such as increasing physical strength, concentration and reaction speed, so it is not advisable to combine energy drinks with alcohol.
The liver and heart have the most to suffer, so the sugar, caffeine and taurine from energy drinks can influence heart rate and increase blood pressure. In addition, energizers do not have the role of improving memory or cognition, contrary to popular belief.
