Proper Practices for Avoiding Flu and Colds

Especially in the cold season, flu and colds are the most frequent respiratory diseases. It can be very easy to get sick during the winter. It only takes a few moments being around a coworker who has the virus, or someone sneezing next to you on the bus – and that’s it. Depending on how strong your immunity system is, it can take days, sometimes even weeks to completely heal.

There are a few things that you can do, however, in order to prevent getting sick. Learn these tips by heart and make sure you apply them in your daily life, to the point where they become a reflex. Here’s what we’ve gathered:

Wash your hands often

Every time you use any kind of public transportation, make sure you clean your hands thoroughly when you reach your destination. Antibacterial wipes are also an option, if you can’t go to a bathroom.

Many people either forget about this, or wash their hands less frequent than they should. You can catch flu on a bus, from a handshake, using a friend’s pen, opening a doorknob – pretty much anything that other people who might be infected can touch. It’s extremely important to start doing this more often, especially in this season.

Stay away from people showing symptoms

This goes without saying. As much as possible, it is recommended to keep a distance from people who are sick, or showing symptoms such as sneezing or coughing. The most frequent way of catching a respiratory disease is from another person. By avoiding direct contact with these people, the risk of getting sick will be drastically reduced.

Stop smoking – we mean it.

Apart from the many health benefits you’ll get if you stop smoking, you’ll also be less prone to respiratory diseases. According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, smokers are more inclined to getting colds.

Furthermore, cigarette smoke can damage the nasal cilia – the small hairs that prevent bacteria from getting through to the organism. Without them, it’s much easier to get infected.

Work out

Daily exercising is known to strengthen our organisms, making them stronger and more resistant to infections. Even a 20-30-minute jog or a small cardio session will make your immunity system stronger. Exercise is recommended not only for being in shape physically, but it also works wonders on the well-being of our organisms.

However, if you are already sick, it is not recommended to exercise.

Acupuncture, a good alternate solution

An alternative remedy known from Chinese traditional medicine is acupuncture. This practice is known for the positive effects it has over our immunity, making it become stronger. Therefore, we’ll be less likely to catch a flu.

Disinfect your personal items

Your mobile phone, or keyboard, are items that can carry lots of microbes and viruses, that’s why it is extremely important to disinfect them on a frequent basis. You can use a tissue with rubbing alcohol or an antibacterial wipe. The more frequent you clean them, the better.

Colds and flu are common infections nowadays, but if they are not treated thoroughly, they can prove to be dangerous. Of course, it won’t always be possible to avoid getting sick, as it can depend on many external factors that you have no control over.
