Maintaining White Teeth: Best Practices

All of us wish to have that beautiful Hollywood smile, with perfectly white teeth. Unfortunately, not everybody can afford to pay large amounts of money for specialized treatments at the dentist.

However, don’t lose your hope – there are a lot of simple tricks you can do to achieve these results, with little to no costs. Here are a few of them:

Apple vinegar

In case your teeth are stained, they can usually be cleansed easily using apple vinegar. All you have to do is apply a small drop of vinegar on your toothpaste, after which simply continue washing your teeth as you normally do. When you’re finished, make sure to rinse your mouth with a lot of water.

This is a good method, just make sure you don’t repeat it very often, as it may break down tooth enamel. Another way is to simply mix a tsp of apple vinegar with water, and just swish it around in your mouth for around one minute.

One of the most frequent ways of teeth whitening is through eating various foods which provide natural whitening.

If you want to have whiter teeth, it is recommended to consume fresh fruits and vegetables, and also milk. For example, it is known that apples, celery and carrots favorize can do wonders in this regard, and strawberries and oranges are even considered to be natural whitening agents, because of their acidity levels.

On the other hands, you should be careful with drinks such as black tea, coffee or red wine, as they have a strong reputation for coloring our teeth. Various types of sauces can have the same effect, unfortunately. This is not to say that you shouldn’t have them at all. Just make sure you consume them with caution and rinse your mouth after.

Homemade tooth cleansing

As most of you already know, lemons can have great whitening effects, since they contain a lot of citric acid. You can brush your teeth once a week with a soft toothbrush soaked in lemon juice. You will find this can be extremely efficient.

Furthermore, for a great DIY tooth cleansing, go to your local healthy food store or pharmacy, and get yourself activated charcoal. You will most usually find it in tablet forms. Simply grind 1-2 tablets, mix them in with some water – just enough to form a paste. Directly apply the resulted mix on your teeth. Don’t brush them, simply let it stay on your teeth for 3 minutes. Afterwards, rinse your mouth well several times and brush your teeth normally.

Whitening toothpaste

Nowadays, there are so many products out there with great whitening properties. Not only can these toothpastes give you a great whitening over a short period of time, and with very little costs, but they also don’t damage your enamel, which is a great thing.

The main active ingredient in most of the whitening toothpastes is peroxide, usually in extremely fine particles and small quantities. This is perhaps one of the easiest and cost-effective methods to try, so we recommend starting out with this at first.

Mouthwash & dental floss

Even though these things may seem optional to some, it is extremely important to understand that they must be a part of our daily tooth care ritual. Daily flossing your teeth is crucial, to get rid of any leftover food stuck between your teeth.

After you’ve finished flossing it is recommended to use mouthwash, in order to prevent the appearance of tartar. Tartar is without doubt one of the most frequent causes of yellow teeth.

People usually underestimate the need of using mouthwash and dental floss on a daily basis. Or they simple think that if they brush their teeth, they can avoid it. However, dentists recommend that all 3 practices should be followed on a daily basis, if you want to maintain clean, white teeth.

With so many different treatments for teeth whitening out there, it can be overwhelming to try and choose the one that fits us best. No matter which way you go, however, remember this: tooth whitening is not a one-time action, you need to stick to it and take good care of your teeth at all times. It’s very easy to get your teeth from white to yellow in a matter of days if you don’t treat them properly.
