How To Find The Motivation To Exercise Daily

Alright, so you’ve decided to do sports, you chose some exercises and came up with a plan, stuck to it for 2-3 days, then gave up. We know how it feels — almost everybody goes through this at least once! In order to stick to your training routine, you need to find your motivation, which is not always as easy as it may seem.

We all want to lose weight, have a perfect body, be healthier and have a better mood – but we don’t necessarily want to achieve our goal through daily exercise. There will always be plenty of excuse for us to lead a sedentary lifestyle: we spend too much time in the office, so our free time usually consists of other events and social obligations, we don’t have a training partner, or we simply don’t feel comfortable going to a gym.

There are 2 types of motivation: Extrinsic and Intrinsic

Extrinsic motivation includes the external reasons that can convince you to do sports: you want to look good throughout summer, when going to the beach; want to drop a few extra kilograms until the wedding; or maybe you just want to look awesome rocking a slim-fit T-Shirt.

In these examples, you wouldn’t do sports necessarily because you like it, but rather because you feel you should. This motivation may be strong enough for a while, but when you have reached your goal, the motivation is gone, soon enough you are sedentary again, and the kilograms will soon start to add back up.

The intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, comes from within yourself, and the mindset here is more like: you workout because you enjoy doing it, or the sensation of coming home after a good session; Perhaps you exercise because it relaxes you; Or you want to be always healthy.

It is clear that the second type of motivation is more important and intense, because it is psychologically stronger, and it doesn’t make you feel forced to exercise. You rather see it as a reward.

How to find the motivation to workout?

First of all, start by giving up on any excuses! Is the subscription to the room too expensive? Then do sports at home. Are you afraid to go jogging into your neighborhood? Go to the gym or get a small treadmill at home. Do you spend most of your time at the office, and then go out with a few friends in the evening? Let’s be honest — it’s impossible to not have 2 hours free at least two days a week.

Then, decide what kind of exercises you want to do. You can try various different ones until you find the ones that you like, but don’t forget that you need to change them from time to time. Decide on the duration and intensity of the exercises from the very beginning, and, at least the first few times, do not push yourself too much.

It is very important to find or create a routine that you enjoy doing. You don’t have to be very passionate about it, but you also shouldn’t hate exercising, or see it as something that you must do, despite the fact that you don’t want to. The mindset is everything here.

Don’t forget to be flexible. There will be occasions when you will feel less motivated, and that’s normal. You don’t do not have to give up everything you worked for, just because you don’t feel like working out on one day. If it happens, take a walk or a light jog for 20 minutes while listening to more engaging music. It’s extremely simple and you will feel great because at least you didn’t just sit in your sofa, watching TV all day.

Another important aspect is to make sure you set some rewards for yourself. For example, if this month can you can go running for 3 times a week, buy yourself that nice jacket you’ve seen at the mall, or some book that you might enjoy reading — anything to make you challenge yourself.
